Ade Orange, Novation Synths on Tour and in the StudioAde Orange has been playing keyboards with synth pioneer Gary Numan for 20 years. On the current world tour Ade uses an entire rig of Novation keyboards. They help him produce everything from those classic analogue sounds from legendary tracks like Are Friends Electric? to the hard-edged industrial grit for tracks from Numan’s latest album, Jagged…Gary Numan has been making music for nearly three decades. From bringing the sound of the synth to the mainstream with tracks such as Cars and Are Friends Electric? to producing hard, industrial albums like Jagged, Numan’s keyboard sounds have obviously always been important. No one knows this more than Ade Orange, Numan’s live keyboard player for the last 20 years and, as the longest serving member of Numan’s band, Ade has certainly had his fair share of challenges… “Obviously with a career spanning so many years, and therefore styles,” he says, “re-creating the sounds used on Gary’s recordings is a demanding process. All sorts of classic analogue synths have been used…” But after trying out many other solutions Ade has now settled on a rig comprising entirely Novation gear. He has two Novation X-Stations and two ReMOTE LEs for this rig plus Novation’s V-Station software in his studio. “I find it very handy to create sounds in the studio on my Mac G5 and then load them into the X-Stations for live use.” But it’s not just the Novation sound that Ade is a fan of. The extra controls and features on all Novation keyboards are also a big bonus… “I am a big fan of the Novation X/Y pad for simultaneous manipulation of cutoff frequency and resonance so popular on the 80s synth stuff, and the effects section is very handy for re-creating live some of the studio effects added to the original sounds on the records. A little distortion, echo and reverb can really bring the sound to life…” And as touring keyboards go, Novation’s portability is second to none, especially as Ade needs all four keyboards on the go simultaneously. “I have four playing surfaces available in a compact space,” he says. “The physical size of the keyboards allows them to fit nicely on the stands and also into two normal-sized flight cases for traveling, which is very important when freighting abroad.” Ade is touring with Gary throughout August in the USA and will be playing at the Guilfest on July 15th plus other European festivals in July and September.
